Off Safety

  • DR. DRE
This was taken backstage in Connecticut for the 'Up In Smoke' tour. I had been waiting years for a chance to take photos of Dre, that was my 5 minute window.

  • KRIS KROSS
Don’t fucking remember. Too much weed.

  • CASH MONEY
Remember when it was cool for rappers to produce their own feature length movies? During the heyday of that trend Cash Money decided to make 'Baller Blockin The Movie' along with a full soundtrack with all new original music. This photo was taken in New Orleans during the filming of one of the scenes in the movie where they screech to a halt, jump out of the mini van and unload a hailstorm of bullets.

  • BIRDMAN
This one was hectic. It was during the infamous 'Cash Money + Ruff Ryders' tour for the Irvine Meadows show. We were sitting in some hotel lobby waiting to get an interview with Juvenile after the concert let out. As usual, a gaggle of groupies and jolly ranchers were also pacing about the venue like hungry vultures. Long story short, I got a few photos of Bryan 'Birdman' Williams in the lobby. That’s it.

  • LIL WAYNE
Wayne was 14 at this time. I remember him telling me about all the cars he owned.

  • EMINEM AND PROOF
Don’t fucking remember. Too much weed.

  • WU-TANG
I’ve been a Wu Head since they first came out. So, by the time 'Wu-Tang Forever' was coming out, I was straight up brainwashed. The video shoot for 'Triumph' was my first official photoshoot for the magazine. I was crazy excited and also super nervous at the same time. To make things even more witty and unpredictable, the entire Clan was passing around a huge Ziploc bag full of mushrooms around the set between filming. As the night got longer, the individual members became harder to track down and the interviews became more abstract. Rae and Ghost were the last ones and I remember them speaking strictly in mathematics.

  • NAS
My boss and I were boarding a flight from JFK headed back home to LAX. As we walked down the aisle we saw NAS sitting by himself in first class. We were bugging! I had my camera in my carry-on and a backup mini cassette recorder. My boss asked one of the flight attendants to pass along an issue of our latest magazine and asked if we could do a quick interview with him. For the next 45 minutes it was just Nas, my boss, and myself taking shots of free liquor in first class.
Extra nerd detail: Nas was heading to LA to film the video for 'Hate Me Now'.

  • E-40
Don’t fucking remember. Too much weed.

  • SNOOP
This was for some lame show on VH1 where they had celebrities come to your house and they would give your interior a full makeover. I just remember something about a giant dog bowl. This photo was taken just outside of Snoop’s Star Wagon.
